To start off, let's take a few moments to consider where we are in life, right now, right here, in this place where we are reading this article.
Let's consider where we are, and let's consider how we got here... Whatever we want to consider as being at 'this stage' of our life, for example, being a parent, being married, pursuing a degree, whatever it is.
How did it all get to this point? How did all of this happen? Was it only one main event that led us to this particular place in our lives, or was it a lifetime of events that occurred, in order for us to be in this specific situation, here and now?
See, through the limited lense of the mind, generally speaking, the only way we feel we can make sense of life, is to break it up into separate events, breaking it down into categories of time and space. Through the mental filters of time and space, we feel that we are able to understand life and make somewhat sense of it, but is this really true? Are the mental filters of time and space not just obstructing us from having a full view of reality?
Let's discuss.
A drop in the ocean
When we are asked to reflect on what lead us to be here where we are right now, we may point out a few events which we feel holds the most importance. Discriminating between what has been more important and what has been less important, some events being more vivid in our memories than others. We may even feel that it was only because of one specific situation, that we are here now, that it was just this one event that happened, which brought us here where we are right now.For example, we may say that if it wasn't for this book we read, or if it wasn't for that person we met, our lives would have been completely different. Yet, is this really true?
Through habit, the mind categorizes life into smaller, separate events, and labels them accordingly as good, bad, fortunate, etc. However, upon closer examination, we realize that in fact all events, every single event, has been equally important, and each one leads to the next one. Each event was the foundation for the next event, and the next, and the next. It goes on and on... See, not only those events that the discriminating ego labels as 'important' are relevant, but it is all relevant, all of it! One event has never been more significant than another one.
Consider how each drop in the ocean is equally important, and how they are all part of the same ocean. One drop is not more or less important than another.
We can use another example to illustrate this point.
When we think of a movie, how it is made up of hundreds or thousands of small clips, being put together. All of these clips are equally important when we consider the whole movie.
If we would be watching each clip individually and in a randomized order, we may feel that some are unimportant, that some are completely irrelevant. Yet, when we watch the full movie without these smaller, supposedly irrelevant clips, we would notice that the movie is not right, it does not make sense to us.
See, all the clips are equally relevant and important, once we have a broader understanding. When we look on a small, individual level, it may be unclear, but when we have the full picture, it all makes perfect sense.
The same goes with life.
An endless happening
Let's consider the following. All of life, each moment in life, has been one great flow, one great happening. We may feel that a lot of separate events are flowing smoothly, one after the other, but when we check up, we realize that it is all just one event happening in the here and now. Each moment, equally important and precious. A continuous flow of Now. Now. Now. Now. Now...It keeps being now, and the happening keeps happening, now. An eternal here and now!
When we realize this, we realize that this whole big event, this whole event that is happening in the now, this is nothing separate from us. It is not something happening externally or separately from us, but it is happening within us, all of it. Our whole Universe and all Her happenings, this is us, this is how we experience our vastness and our beauty.
We are life itself. We are the Universe itself. How do we know this? Because we are experiencing it all the time! Just like an apple tree 'apples', we as Life are 'living'. An apple is an expression of the apple tree. Our Universe is an expression of us.
Through this understanding, we see that we are not this small, limited human being that we have been identifying as all along. We have been the Universe all along! Throughout all of the 'happenings' of our Universe, we have been the ones sitting behind it all along, it has always been us!
This may sound a bit crazy or challenging to comprehend when we look through the limited lenses of the mind, but as we dissolve the ego and as we stop to identify with the mind and the body, we start to feel this connection, this unity. Yes, this is not a mere theory or an idea, we can actually start to feel this connection, this vastness of our Being!
We don't have to simply believe this as some theory - we can check up for ourselves.
Great Love
As the ego-mind dissolves more and more, we come to realize that the vastness of our Being is nothing new, it is not that we were ever not one with everything, or disconnected from anything. It is simply that we have been paying the ego too much attention and not going in deeper to discover our True Nature, which has always been there, since beginningless time.Actually, saying that we 'started' to be one with our Universe would be a false statement, because that would imply that there was a time that we were not one with our Universe. Again, we have always been One, we have merely been too distracted to realize this.
Now, before we have this feeling of unity with our Universe, the ego may have ideas of using this in a way to manipulate the world in order to fulfill all its desires and attachments. If this is what we are hoping for, we are merely opening the door towards endless unhappiness and suffering. This mentality derives from an ego-mind.
On the contrary, when we experience the vastness of our Being and a One-ness, we feel our hearts opening as wide as the Universe itself. There is a great, great love towards it all, everyone, everything because we know that all of this exists within ourselves. Universal Love. It is all us, it has always been us, and loving everyone has never been easier.
Accordingly, we naturally experience great compassion, which comes with great wisdom. Compassion towards our suffering, meaning the suffering of the Universe, but the wisdom to understand that our suffering leads us towards lasting peace and happiness.
Now. A beautiful, eternal moment in which we are happening.

Our Being, vast and eternal like the sky. Even when obscured with egoistic thoughts, like clouds, our vastness remains. |

Dear readers,
ReplyDeleteAs a side note, the author would like to add that the intention of this topic is to bring our attention to the oneness, the unity existing between self and others, or between the universe and the observer.
We do not want to imply that 'this life' or 'this world' is all that there is, and that 'life on Earth' is the main event. We are merely implying that in whichever state the mind is, whatever the kind of universe the mind may be manifesting, we are nothing separate from it. It exists within us.
Not to expand too much here in the comment section, just as a note to the article.
