Our own reflection

In this article, we are going to explore the world and how we see it in relation to ourselves. This article will offer us the opportunity to check up and see what is really happening on the 'inside'.

Through our societies, education, and beliefs, we are conditioned to see the world as something separate from us. We see the world and everything in it as objects. Then, as the subject, we experience thoughts of attachment, desire, or aversion towards the objects.

We are conditioned to see ourselves as a person and a body, and we are conditioned to see 'others' and their bodies.

In this way, the idea of separation arises. Needles to say, this idea brings a whole lot of unhappiness.

As inside, so outside

We have concluded that when we consider ourselves to be a person, a physical body, we see other 'persons' and 'bodies' in the world, right?

Now, if we consider ourselves to be, for example, a white person, then we see other 'white persons' and also other 'non-white persons'. This makes sense, doesn't it?

If, for example, we identify as a Christian, it is possible that we see other Christians, we relate to them, and we see other 'non-Christians' and we feel separated from them.

The same can be applied to any other identity we take on. Believing we are this, we see a world divided into this and not this.

The identity creates the idea of separation.

Un-identified

Now, what happens when we start to investigate ourselves? With sincerity, we can investigate whether we are truly this person, this body, these labels and identities we believe to be.

Upon investigation, these seemingly solid identities start to become transparent. Upon even deeper investigation, they dissolve. When our own apparent limitations and identities fade away, so does the limitations and identities we place on 'others' and the 'world'.

This shift in perception has a direct impact on our experience. It has a direct impact on our experience of inner peace and happiness.

To conclude, the author is not suggesting that we look for a new identity or label. We simply investigate the labels and identities we currently hold on to. We check up, and we see what we are not.
