In this short article, we are going to reflect on the subject our world revolves around.
Ourself.
How many times per day do we say 'me', 'my', and 'I'?
Even more, how many times a day do we think 'me', 'my' and 'I'?
We'll notice that nearly every thought is arising on behalf of this idea we have of ourselves.
How we feel in relation to this or that, what we plan on doing regarding this or that. What we desire, what we dislike, and more.
Yet, who is this 'I'?
Who or what are we referring to when we think of ourselves? Before proceeding to the next paragraph, let's ask ourselves who or what we truly are...
Identifying as the body keeps us in an unhappy cycle of limitation, intimidation, and separation.
Of course, this physical body is impermanent and fragile. We observe it changing, getting old, getting sick. So, why would we think we are this body?
The same goes for the sensations we experience coming and going within the body, also known as 'feelings'. We identify as these sensations or feelings, and say that "I am sad" or "I am angry". When we observe closely, we realize that these sensations are quite neutral. We only connect thoughts of sadness and anger to them.
Even these thoughts, they come and go, they keep changing. So surely, we cannot be these thoughts either, right? If we are witnessing their coming and going, how can we be them?
We know that we most certainly and definitely are, we do not deny our existence.
We all say that "I am". But, who are we? What are we?
Having this doubt is great! It shows that we are open to the possibility that we are not this limited, physical person.
Investigating, we realize that we have always been prior to any thought, sensation, perception. We witness these arising and dissolving. Even the concept of time, we witness this appearing and fading.
Not only are we aware of this, but we are also the knower of this.
Consider this 'knowing element' - not the thought that says "I know", but the witness of this thought, the awareness of it.
Let us turn our attention towards our own awareness. Let us be aware of being aware, and let us acknowledge who we truly are.

Limitations
Checking up, we realize that we mostly refer to ourselves as the physical body. Accordingly, we take ownership of the actions of the body, and we also take ownership of the fruits of these actions.Identifying as the body keeps us in an unhappy cycle of limitation, intimidation, and separation.

The Seer and the seen
Knowing this, we can be left with quite an uncertainty. If we are not this body, the sensations, the thoughts, what are we?We know that we most certainly and definitely are, we do not deny our existence.

Seeing through the limitations we impose on ourselves, we realize the vastness and freedom of our Being. |
